Go to video overviewMali remains one of the poorest countries in the world and it has been identified by Save the Children as one of the worst places in the world to be a woman or child, ranking last of 110 countries. Poverty is pervasive, but it is particularly grinding in rural areas because of isolation, culture, tradition, religion, and customs that often put women at a disadvantage. To improve the quality education for girls and end the cycle of poor education in the village, Save the Children will provide school supplies and textbooks for students and tools for teachers. Also, school libraries will be established and girls will be encouraged to read. The learning process will be supported through distribution of micronutrients such as Vitamin A and iron, as well as deworming tablets to increase student health and wellbeing, thus affecting their ability to attend school and concentrate and learn while being there. The project will address barriers to girls' education through an integrated approach that includes community mobilization, collaboration with local government agencies, teacher trainings, direct educational interventions and infrastructure improvements. Combined, these activities will provide a safe and welcoming environment where children --particularly girls-- can receive quality education, a fundamental human right and a foundation for quality of life that every child deserves irrespective of where they live.
