If you have a child with asthma, now is the time to prepare for the start of school and the challenges presented by both asthma and influenza. Returning to the school environment always poses challenges to kids with asthma. Children with asthma are at greater risk from influenza, and this year, the presence of H1N1 virus (swine flu) and regular seasonal flu mean the need to prepare is even greater. The American Lung Association has tips to help you prepare to go back to school with asthma.

Military Urged to Battle Tobacco

A new report confirms that the brave men and women in our military are under attack by an old and familiar foe – tobacco. Not only is smoking destroying their health and shortening lives, it’s also costing the government billions of dollars every year in lost productivity, hospitalizations and treatment of chronic and often fatal diseases linked to smoking. But now momentum is building for the military to end the cycle and go smokefree, and the American Lung Association is ready to help.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently took a step toward helping to identify the potential impacts of pollution in local communities. The Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (EPHT) is a web-based tool that allows scientists, health professionals, and—for the first time—the American public, to track data about environmental exposures and chronic health conditions. Asthma hospitalizations, in addition to air quality, are some of the factors being tracked. The American Lung Association participated in the early planning for this network.
